The Canton Fair: A Barometer of China‘s Foreign Trade and a Bellwether of Global Commerce
Since its inception in 1957, the China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) has been the longest-running, largest-scale, most comprehensive international trade event in China, featuring the widest range of products, the most diverse sources of buyers, the best trade results, and the strongest reputation. From traditional commodities in its early days to today’s smart technologies, the Canton Fair has always served as a barometer of China’s foreign trade and a bellwether of global commerce.
The 140th Canton Fair will be held in Guangzhou from October 15 to November 4, 2026. The total exhibition area will reach approximately 1.55 million square meters, with 75,700 standard booths, maintaining its status as the world’s largest trade fair. Over 30,000 enterprises are expected to participate, including approximately 2,800 brand-name companies, with high-tech, national champion, and specialized and sophisticated SMEs accounting for about one-third of all exhibitors.
The fair is organized in three phases:
Phase 1 (October 15–19) focuses on “Advanced Manufacturing,” featuring electronics and home appliances, new energy vehicles and smart mobility, industrial automation and intelligent manufacturing, and new energy. Home Appliances remains one of the core exhibition zones and a perennial focal point for global buyers.
Phase 2 (October 23–27) highlights “Quality Home.”
Phase 3 (October 31–November 4) centers on “Better Life.”
This edition of the Canton Fair will continue to champion the development direction of “Innovation, Green, and Intelligence,” offering global buyers a one-stop trading platform with complete product categories, excellent quality at competitive prices, efficient services, and trusted reliability. The 139th Canton Fair attracted 314,000 overseas buyers from 220 countries and regions. After seven decades of openness, the Canton Fair’s global network continues to expand.

Yiwu: The “Super Hub” of Global Small-Commodity Trade and a Rising Force in Brand Globalization
If the Canton Fair is the bellwether of global trade, then Yiwu is one of the most vibrant pulses of China’s foreign trade. In 2025, Yiwu’s total import and export value exceeded 800 billion yuan for the first time, reaching 836.5 billion yuan, with exports of 730.7 billion yuan, up 24.1% year-on-year. Small commodities are no longer just “cheap goods.” More and more Yiwu businesses are refining their designs, incorporating cultural elements, and building their own brands. In 2023, Yiwu officially launched the “Yiwu China Small-Commodity City” Brand Globalization Plan, aiming to build a globally recognized brand system through overseas branch markets, overseas showrooms, and overseas exhibitions. The global flagship store of Yiwu Selection secured over 120 million yuan in orders within just five hours of its opening, and its 2.0 version received orders for 503 containers on its first day. To date, Yiwu Selection has been established in 12 countries across five continents, with plans to expand partnerships to 20 countries and regions in 2026.
The home appliance industry is a key driver of Yiwu’s brand globalization. In 2025, Yiwu’s household appliance exports reached 20.45 billion yuan, up 23.6% year-on-year. From the “front shop, back factory” model of trade-industry integration to digital trade and brand globalization, Yiwu is transforming from the “world’s factory” to the “world’s brands.”
